lyrics for living 15 (tender)

I should have anticipated the resonance that would happen.

An old church building. In the mountains. In India. A concrete floor. Curved wooden window frames. Little chrysanthemum flowers in pots near the pulpit. Those woven plastic strips on the chairs. An auditorium filled with young people. A balcony.  It just goes on and on...

It could almost have been Union Church in Mussoorie, circa 1969, with me at 9 years of age. But it isn't. It is Japfu Christian College in Kohima, Nagaland. It is 2019. 50 years later. And yet the similarities are almost eerie. The resonance is deep.

Then we started singing. Now there is a little lubrication to moisten the resonance. The very same hymns. Have I sung them in church worship services in the intervening years? It is possible. Have I sung both of them in the one worship service in the intervening years? Impossible.

As we walked away, I turned to Barby and said, "I do miss the tenderness in those old hymns." Yes, I do. They have an uncanny way of knowing me and articulating my longings.

[With this Lyrics for Living series, I like to include a clip from you-tube of the hymn being sung. It was hard work this time, as I am not into big choirs and organ-facilitated congregational singing. So I did the best I could do, short of singing them myself - which would be disastrous].

Teach me thy way, O Lord; teach me thy way;
Thy gracious aid afford, teach me thy way.
Help me to walk aright; more by faith, less by sight;
Lead me with heaven'ly light, teach me thy way.

When I am sad at heart, teach me thy way.
When earthly joys depart, teach me thy way.
In hours of loneliness, in times of dire distress,
In failure or success, teach me thy way.

When doubts and fears arise, teach me thy way;
When storms o'erspread the skies, teach me thy way.
Shine through the cloud and rain, through sorrow, toil and pain;
Make thou my pathway plain, teach me they way.

Long as my life shall last, teach me thy way;
Where'er my lot be cast, teach me thy way.
Until the race is run, until the journey's done,
Until the crown is won, teach me they way.

Saviour, like a shepherd lead us, much we need thy tender care;
In thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou has bought us, thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou hast bought us, thine we are.

We are thine; do thou befriend us, be the guardian of our way;
Keep thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear, O hear us when we pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse, and pow'are to free.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, early let us turn to thee;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, early let us turn to thee.

Early let us seek thy favour; early let us do thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Saviour, with thy love our beings fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou has loved us, love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou has loved us, love us still.

You'll just have to sing the final two verses for yourself, unaccompanied 😀.
